Classification of Grip Styles → First, understand how the hand is positioned on the mouse.
There are three main mouse grip styles: palm grip (the entire palm rests on the mouse), claw grip (the palm hovers while the fingers arch and grip), and fingertip grip (only the fingertips make contact). Many people use a hybrid style, so there is no need to force a strict classification. The bottom line is this: there is no "good" or "bad" grip—only what suits you best. With the same mouse, a palm-grip user might find it comfortable, while a fingertip-grip user might find it too bulky.
Palm grip: The back of the mouse should be high and full to support the palm.
Fingertip Grip: The mouse should be low and short with a tapered waist, facilitating gripping and lifting with the fingertips.
Grip: Intermediate; medium-sized, with a moderately arched back.
By also considering hand size, one can roughly determine whether a mouse is suitable for a particular type of user.
Different grip styles require different shell designs. If a brand relies on a single mold for all its products, the result is a lineup that looks virtually identical—leaving users with the feeling that something is missing. For OEM/ODM manufacturers, the ability to offer shell options tailored to various grip styles is a key competitive advantage. Factors such as mold tooling costs, minimum order quantities (MOQs), and SKU management must all be calculated with this in mind.
Center of Gravity: A forward-leaning balance suits a fingertip grip, while a rear-leaning balance suits a palm rest.
Weight: Lower weight helps with lifting the mouse during fingertip or claw grips; palm-grip users are less concerned about this.
Surface: Whether the surface becomes slippery when sweaty directly determines whether a user will abandon the mouse.
These three points do not change *how* you grip, but they determine *how long* and *how steadily* you can hold it.
Have people with different grip styles perform the same actions—lifting, flicking, and making micro-adjustments to the mouse. Record who tires first, who is prone to errors, and how stable the lift is. This provides an objective basis for product selection and quality acceptance, eliminating the need for arguments based merely on subjective feelings.
